Opening Day Off and Running With Live Two Year Olds
With the first day of summer racing at Del Mar upon us, so happens to be the first 2 yr old race of the meet. The 5thrace on Wednesdays card offers racing fans a chance to see some highly touted 2 yr old fillies. Lead by Tyfosha, trained by Doug O’neil and ridden by Victor Espinoza, Tyfosha is by Flatterout of Penny Marie by Sky Classic. She has prior racing experience going off as a heavy favorite at Santa Anita finishing second behind Surrender Now, who came back to win dominantly in the Landaluce Stakes. Tyfosha’s debut was much awaited after talk about her workout with stablemate Saudi Chrome who had a very impressive debut victory. Her last workout was a 6 furlong bullet from a group of 21 at Santa Anita. She will have some formidable opponents though in what looks to be a rather classy field of fillies. Varasani will be a first time starter for Richard Mandella with Flavien Prat aboard. She’s by new sire Jimmy Creed out of a proven mare Yearly Report. Yearly Report won over 835k in her career and has already dropped a black print type in Condo Commando, she’s had 4 winners from 5 starters. Longshot Mapit looks to have a live shot with up and comer Evin Roman on board for Jerry Hollendorfer. Mapit is by Tapit out of Mi Vida by Distorted Humor. With heavy amounts of A.P. Indy, Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer in her blood she could be any type. Trainer Peter Miller sends out a pair of Kentucky Bred runners in Broome and My Princess Taylor. My Princess Taylor is by Distored Humor out of Redreamit by Tapit. Redreamit has 3 winners from 3 runners. Scorching hot trainer Bob Baffert sends out his Kentucky Bred filly by Into Mischief out of Pooh Corner by Tapit. Coming off some quick workouts with Rafael Bejarano aboard this filly could also be a factor. Other horses that look to be in the mix are Innyminniemineymoe with vet Joseph Talamo aboard and Fracas by Violence who has been doing well so far as a first year sire. Our Slick Chick and Halo Girl round out the field.
